Keeping Your Online Credit Recovery Program On Track
Credit recovery programs are most often used to help students get back on track to graduation, and the great thing about these programs is that they don’t only have to be used as a tool for when students are already failing.
These programs can also be another tool to include in overall student graduation plans to ensure that students get identified early when they show early signs of risk so that intervention plans can be tailored to address their needs. It’s about catching students before they need credit recovery, too!
How to Keep a Credit Recovery Program on Track
Our team of expert consultants will share best practices they’ve collected over many years in the classroom, which include how to keep your Courseware online credit recovery program on track to success based on what we’ve learned from partnering with schools across the country who have discovered what worked when rolling out their own credit recovery programs.
Online Program Setup
- Model, post, and teach procedures to students for common online program tasks such as:
- Using the different options to ask for help
- Logging in and out of the program
- Navigating to assignments
- Make academic teacher(s) available via email, in virtual office hours, or by some other designation for content questions. In Courseware, you can use the Collaboration Tool to communicate with students.
- Provide a consistent time for students to access online course content so that they can make it a habit to work on coursework at specific times throughout the week and not fall behind.
Progress Monitoring
- Monitor progress consistently, and communicate with learners on a regular basis.
- Schedule weekly progress meetings with students so that they’re aware of how they’re progressing in the online program and to encourage them to continue with their credit recovery.
- Use data reports and your own observations at both the individual and the class level to identify trends and patterns that need attention.
- Provide additional instruction when necessary to the entire class or to small breakout groups based on trends in reporting/observations.
- Schedule one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions, as needed.
Collaboration and Incentives
- Utilize Breakout rooms available in video conferencing platforms to provide opportunities for student peer support so they can collaborate with each other individually or in groups to review concepts.
- Encourage students by creating an incentive plan for those who master specific modules or meet agreed-upon milestones in an appropriate timeline.
Organization and Portfolios
- Have students take notes in a notebook (physical or virtual). In Courseware, students can use the notetaking feature within the program. Or, they can use other online resources, such as Evernote or OneNote, to keep all notes in one place. This makes it easier to review notes prior to tests.
- Have students keep a physical portfolio (speaking of keeping things in one place) to hold:
- A copy of their contract
- A course tracking sheet and/or their notebook
- Offline documents (if applicable)
- Progress reports
The benefits of having our Edmentum Professional Services team involved in training and implementation with new and returning customers is that we continuously learn new ways that educators make online learning more approachable to students.
